INTERNATIONAL TALKS IN CITY HALL
Unison will host a range of talks from guest speakers representing various NGOs on a monthly basis, starting on the 23rd of June. The talks, which will be held in the City Management Suite of City Hall, will allow members to learn more about the experiences of working people and trade unionists around the world, global labour issues, and other serious political issues.
Talks will come from the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (30th July), the radical development charity War on Want (28th August) – focusing, among other things, on the murder of trade unionists in Colombia, with the complicity of the Coca-Cola Company; and Human Rights Watch, who will discuss abuse of labour rights around the world, including the gem trade in Myanmar (Burma).
The talks are scheduled to continue throughout the year and beyond, with other invitees including Liberty, Amnesty International, the International Red Cross, and the Cuba Solidarity Campaign. Hopefully members will find these a useful and interesting introduction to global political issues and will place our trade union work in a broader, international context.
Any member that would like to suggest relevant groups/speakers they would like to see in the future should contact Paul Brown (pbrown@westminster.gov.uk) or Mike Hill (mhill@westminster.gov.uk).
