News has reached us of dramatic cuts to Lewisham’s library service.

2 August 2010, 9:11pm

Could this be the future of Services in Westminster? Having stated that the program of cuts will allow money to be diverted to front line services, it now transpires that Lewisham will be closing 5 libraries
Mayor of Lewisham Sir Steve Bullock has been quoted saying "Every pound we can save through efficiency is a pound we can spend on frontline services" & intended to minimise cuts by seeing where things like senior management and back room staff can be shared (see link to article below).

However it has just been announced that Lewisham now plan to shut down 5 Libraries! A recent Council report confirms: "Around £80k will be achieved by reshaping service delivery in the Home Library Service with a proposed staff restructure and reduction in posts. The remainder of the saving will be achieved by reducing the number of libraries and associated restructure of staff. A public consultation will commence in the summer to seek views on a proposal to close 5 libraries".

How does this fit with the Mayor's previous statement? Libraries are not only a frontline service, but an essential part of their local communities, providing access to books & other media to a wide range of customers.

An e petition has been set up to protest against this cut to library services. If you'd like to show your support to your colleagues in Lewisham why not follow this link & complete the petition? Who knows, maybe next time it will be libraries in Westminster that are looking for support.
