However it has just been announced that Lewisham now plan to shut down 5 Libraries! A recent Council report confirms: "Around £80k will be achieved by reshaping service delivery in the Home Library Service with a proposed staff restructure and reduction in posts. The remainder of the saving will be achieved by reducing the number of libraries and associated restructure of staff. A public consultation will commence in the summer to seek views on a proposal to close 5 libraries".
How does this fit with the Mayor's previous statement? Libraries are not only a frontline service, but an essential part of their local communities, providing access to books & other media to a wide range of customers.
An e petition has been set up to protest against this cut to library services. If you'd like to show your support to your colleagues in Lewisham why not follow this link & complete the petition? Who knows, maybe next time it will be libraries in Westminster that are looking for support.
