Read All About It – Tory Press Attacks Trade Unions!

5 July 2010, 10:21pm

Both the Sunday Telegraph & the Times have been probing the cost of the paid time off that Unison officials use in order to carry out their duties.

The Sunday Telegraph launched a Freedom of Information request to all Local Authorities asking them how much Facility Time they provided & how much this cost. We're certain that they'll have been disappointed with the relatively low cost of this provision.

The Times said that the Government pays out "Millions" every year to allow Union Reps to spend time on "far left political campaigns and making up false claims about the Conservative Party". We'd like to share the link to this article with you but we can't (as the Times now charge for their website).

It seems clear to us that this is the start of an attack against Trade Unions in an attempt to weaken them immediately prior to the implementation of massive cuts.

Here at Westminster Unison we often struggle to maintain our Facility Time & are too busy advising & representing our members to spend time making claims about the Conservative Party, & that's the case for most other Branches too. But given these latest attacks from the Tory press maybe we should start.

Next time you're worried about a meeting with your manager or have workplace issues you might like to consider if you think it's wasted money - don't let them take away your Union!

We doubt they'll be interested in your views & they certainly won't publish them, but why not let then know how you feel?
