Given the terrible housing shortage in central London many may think it a crime that these properties would be left empty.
However, it's not just the housing shortage that concerns Unison: it's our members jobs that are our priority.
How many jobs could be saved if Westminster had collected all of the rent due? How much other money have Westminster failed to collect? This latest revelation just adds to the catalogue of wasted opportunities to sort out WCC's finances:
- £2 Million in uncollected rents for April '08 to April ‘09
- Up to £750K on re-tendering the parking contract
- £900 per day (£216K per year) the Council are spending on just one contractor.
- £20K being spent to keep an empty building standing.
- £23K having supper at the Civic Dinner.
That adds up to a Grand Total of £3,009,000 that WCC have either wasted or failed to collect. Perhaps the next round of "efficiencies" should start off by addressing these issues and those who have been responsible for them?
Or will WCC continue to try & make back their financial shortfall by making posts redundant?
We think we know the answer...
