Civic Greed

6 March 2010, 3:18am

£23,000 could pay to keep a member of staff at work for a year
Dear Member,
Despite it being a very difficult time for us here at Westminster and despite the fact that jobs and services have been and continue to be cut to save money. Westminster councillors will be holding a £23,000 dinner at the Northumberland Hotel on Tuesday 9th March.
Obviously the belt tightening and cost cutting across the council doesn't stretch as far as the 18th floor! Councillors are surely aware of the public view of UK politics at the moment yet they fully intend to go ahaead with their expensive back slapping, face stuffing event. I don't know about you but it feels very much like a two finger salute to the workforce!
Westminster UNISON will be holding a protest outside of the hotel to shame those councillors dripping in greed who turn up to stick their snouts in the trough.
We won't be alone in our protest, I have been in touch with several groups, some who were going to attend and demonstrate anyway and some who want to come along and show support for staff who have lost their jobs and those left behind still facing cutbacks.
We will be leaving City Hall at 17:45 if you'd like to head to Trafalgar Sq with us, alternatively we will be outside the hotel at 18:00. We'll only be there for a couple of hours.
It's vitally important that we have a good showing at this event as there is sure to be press coverage both local and national.
I'll see you there!

Stephen Higgins
