WESTMINSTER CITY COUNCIL GIVES STAFF THE COLD SHOULDER

10 February 2009, 2:02am

Westminster UNISON engages the disputes procedure in response to the Council's proposal to require staff to take annual leave following the severe weather last week.

Phil Vaughan, Westminster UNISON Branch Secretary wrote to Alastair Gilchrest, Group Director for Resources complaining about the City Council's unfair policy for dealing with people who could not make it into work last week due to the severe weather.

Whilst we await the outcome of the disputes procedure, Westminster UNISON advice remains the same:

  • Staff who had to take time off for childcare issues (due to school closures) should apply for special leave. Please contact us if you have had this refused.

  • Westminster UNISON will support individual members who feel aggrieved at their Employer's stance on this issue and wish to take out individual grievances.

"This policy is totally unfair and ham fisted, some staff were informed by their managers not to come into work, others were sent home and now they are facing a reduction in annual leave to cover the absence", said Stephen Higgins, Westminster UNISON Branch Secretary (Elect).

We will update as soon as we have more information. In the meantime, read the letter engaging the disputes procedure here.
