Interim Headteacher, Jo Shuter has unilaterally decided not implement the agreement to a 45 minute lunchtime from June 2nd 2008.
Background:
On Tuesday 10th of June, a meeting took place at the request of the NUT who met with Jo Shuter and Bob Barnett. Management began by offering a 45 minute lunch, with a commitment for members to supervise the last 5 minutes of lunch. The NUT were willing to explore this offer until Jo Shuter intervened to say she would not wear it, because of the "Health & Safety" implications. No evidence was produced as to why things had deteriorated so much.
Later in the afternoon they offered 40 minutes from June 16th. This was put to NUT members on 12th June 2008 in a secret ballot without recommendation. With an 80% percent turnout, 72% of those voting, voted to reject the offer. NUT members felt very strongly that whatever the merits of the lunch break issue, they were not going to be treated in such an arrogant, high-handed manner.
The NUT cannot accept such a breach of faith by Jo Shuter. It is unclear why she is choosing to pick a fight so close to the end of her tenure at Pimlico. A commitment was provided yesterday from the Council and from Jerry Collins that the lunch break from September 2008 will be at least 45 minutes. It may be 50 minutes.
NO COVER - UNISON members in Schools are asked to support action.
We ask UNISON members to take annual leave where possible and NOT TO COVER WORK FOR STRIKING NUT MEMBERS.
