Workforce Remodelling

The School Workforce Agreement was signed in January 2003. The agreement was designed to improve the status and conditions of all who work in schools.

The aim of the agreement is to reduce the workload of teachers, freeing them to do planning, preparation and assessment. These proposals will redefine and change the roles, responsibilities and relationships between teachers and a range of support staff in school.

They also aim to increase the number of support staff from currently 200,000 to 250,000. The ‘big culture change' envisaged by the government will mean a wider range of support staff in schools with a much broader range of duties.

The National Remodelling Team (NRT), established by the DfES and hosted by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA), works with LEAs and schools to explore how remodelling can enable them to implement the contractual changes introduced by the agreement.

Workforce Agreement Monitoring Group

The Workforce Agreement Monitoring Group (WAMG) is a unique partnership of 10 organisations representing employers, the government and school workforce unions as Signatories of the National Agreement signed on 15 January 2003. UNISON has a seat on this.

Regular meetings of WAMG take place. WAMG produce regular advice notes to help schools manage issues around the implementation of the National Agreement. All the guidance notes are available from this website. Click here to get to the WAMG Notes
